Vocalist Janet Sanzo remembers growing up in Baltimore Maryland, characterized in high school as “the one who is always singing”. Her early studies of voice and dance at the prestigious Peabody Conservatory led to a concentration in Theatre Arts in college. Janet was soon starring in musicals, touring with the USO, performing throughout the Borscht Circuit in the Catskill Mountains and enchanting audiences in both the US and abroad.
Likened to “a young Judy Garland” and “Lena Horne for sheer appeal ”Janet’s style has been called “mesmerizing, intoxicating, playful, vulnerable, sensuous and sincere”.
“It’s not unusual for me to bring an audience to tears…I guess that’s a good thing”, she says with a smile. “Perhaps the years I spent as a nurse add a depth of interpretation to the lyrics. I try to honor the melody, inhabit the story, deliver the story to the heart of the audience. I love everything about the process, mostly the people… moving the people.”
Since turning her attention to jazz singing, a student of the eminent vocalist Tammy McCann, Janet draws inspiration from the gold standards of the Great American Songbook, Broadway and popular tunes. The great Nancy Wilson, Lena Horne, Nina Simone, Eva Cassidy stand as pillars of inspiration for Janet.
Janet has been singing in the Chicago area – performing at private parties and many venues including Petterino’s, The Blue Star Wine Bar, Twelve West Elm , Davenport’s Cabaret, Uncommon Ground and The Wilmette Theatre among others. Her debut CD – MORE THAN EVER – is receiving international airplay.
